Explore the Stunning 22 Miles of Sandy Beaches on the English Riviera

26 October 2016 | 0 comments

Along the coastline in South Devon, there are 20 coves and sandy beaches on the English Riviera. Many of these have won coveted awards for quality and cleanliness.

Linking each of these fabulous beaches is the South West Coast Path, which stretches from Maidencombe to the south side of Brixham. Take this walk around the Bay to experience spectacular sea views and varied walking terrains.

The beaches at Paignton are well known for their long, gently sloping, stretches of golden sands. Broadsands, Goodrington and Paignton are recommended for family bathing, while during the stormier, breezy days they are ideal locations for surfers. The children will love to enjoy the sea and explore the rock pools. Find out for yourself how Paignton’s beaches offer a stunning backdrop to fantastic, seaside summer holidays for all the family.

Beaches on the English Riviera

Preston Sands and Paignton Sands – over ½ mile of sandy beach stretching from Preston to Paignton Harbour. No dogs allowed. Café and beach shop on the beach with toilet facilities nearby.

Goodrington Sands (North) – Gently sloping sandy beach, excellent for snorkelling. Close to the Promenade which is illuminated at night, fantastic for a stroll and exercising. Dogs are allowed here.

Goodrington Sands (South) – The sandy beaches here are exposed at both high and low water and are close to Quay West. No dogs allowed.

Hollicombe Beach, Torquay – Also named by the locals as “Gas Works Beach”, but don’t worry, there are no gasworks present. Only moderate disabled access at this beach.

Fairy Cove, Paignton Harbour – This small shingle and sandy beach is accessed from the steps at the back of the harbour. Swimming is only allowed at high tide unless you plan to scuba dive or snorkel over the rocks. Note there is no parking for vehicles at this location.

Broadsands Beach, Torquay – A large sandy, gradually shelving beach, usually quiet, with swimming allowed, warning flags in operation. Moderately disabled access.

Three Beaches – A sandy, shingle beach stretching between Goodrington South Sands and Broadsands. The beach is accessed from Waterside or by the Coastal Path. The location is really more coves than beach area. It incorporates a marine conservation area, popular with nature lovers and geologists.
