As autumn approaches, our thoughts may turn to a late mini-break, an October half-term, family holiday or perhaps pre-Christmas Devon weekend breaks.
Accommodation in Devon, off season
Depending on when you choose to take your holiday, could well affect your choice of accommodation. During peak summer season, holiday apartments in Paignton, Torquay and Brixham areas will most likely be fully booked well in advance. This means your choice may have to be limited to other locations on the English Riviera. In the late autumn and winter seasons, however, apart from the very popular Christmas and New Year periods, you will generally find a much larger selection of properties available to book.
Amazing holidays on the South Coast at Devon
The coastline here on the English Riviera features calm waters, stunning beaches and rolling green fields, dotted with pretty harbour villages and towns. The area has some of the best self-catering holiday apartments, many with sea-views, including those in Paignton, Torbay and Torquay. This type of accommodation is popular both with holidaymakers wishing to experience the thriving food culture centred on locally sourced ingredients, and those who enjoy the seashores, the harbours and the boating community.
The title of the county of Devon is derived from “Dyfnaint”, a Celtic name granted to an isolated tribe of people known as the “Dumnonji” people, during the Iron Age. The meaning of this title is “deep valley dwellers”. They were a hospitable and peaceful race, very similar to those Devon inhabitants of the modern day.
A number of famous historical figures have all been born in this Devon region – Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake, both experts in the field of maritime exploration, not forgetting the dishonourable Pirate, Henry Avery, who was born and also died in Devon.
