News Roundup in and around Paignton

20 April 2016 | 1 comments

It’s nice to know a little bit about what’s going on in an area where you may be planning to spend a holiday. Paignton may have lots of holiday flats and apartments in what can realistically be described as a thriving coastal resort, but there are also some pretty interesting things happening on the English Riviera all the time. So here is a brief news roundup of tourist related events:

If you go down to the woods today ………..

Some tree clearing work that was going on in Chapel Woods, Torquay recently, revealed a hidden chapel that experts and historians believe was built in the late 1100s. Some believe that St. Michael’s Chapel was built by The Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré  (better known in England as the White Canons)  residing at Torre Abbey. Nevertheless, former members of a History Club at Torquay Library are determined to find out as much as they can about the historic building and welcome any information anyone may have about it.

Paignton Zoo takes charge of a Northern Kiwi (Brown Kiwi)

This endangered flightless species has come all the way from a German zoo making him the first of his type in the UK. Named Manu, he is 5 years old but won’t be able to have a mate for around 2 years. This is because the zoo keepers at Paignton Zoo do not have the necessary skills required by conservationists to allow them to have a pair.  Once they have the requisite skills they will be allocated a hen. However since Manu is likely to live until he gets to 40 he will still be in his prime when a mate arrives. Find out more about Manu and why a metal detection team had to scan his enclosure before he arrived.

Paignton Zoo is within easy travelling distance of our holiday flats and is a great day out for all the family.

Did you spot our fluorescent green sea?

If you were near Paignton beach last week, or enjoying the sea view, you might have noticed the sea water had turned a distinctive, fluorescent shade of green. This happened as the Environment Agency released a dye into the water as a means of testing it. Whilst our beaches and sea water have passed quality checks before, because of recent storms the sea was tested again for any potential pollution. This is normal practice after storms and just before the beginning of the holiday season which begins in May.  The dye is not toxic so if you happened to be in the sea at the time, you will come to no harm.
