Woken from a deep sleep by my desk phone ringing I picked it up to find my editor on the other end. “John” she said, “I want you to write a short article on bonfires and holiday flats in Paignton, Devon.
“Good Lord”, I responded “is someone setting fire to them? Have we got a scoop?”
“No, no, no,” she sighed “I need you to go there and find out where the best Guy Fawkes Party is being held so that those people thinking about taking a self-catering holiday in Paignton can have a great night out!”
“Oh, I see, I’ll set off immediately,” I said, wondering how I would be able to influence anyone to take a break in the UK in the middle of winter.
There is so much to do in Paignton and surrounding areas?
However, by the time I had finished my research I wondered why I had never been to Paignton before, more especially during the November 5th celebrations. There is so much to do there that will appeal to families, the perfect short break perhaps.
Quite apart from a number of Halloween and Bonfire Events being held at Primary Schools and other venues the most outstanding in my opinion, will take place at Shaldon which is only eight and a half miles from Paignton and has a regular bus service. Every year there is a Bonfire and Fireworks Night celebration that takes place on Shaldon Beach.
This year they have outdone themselves with a Samba band and lantern procession. A Guy Fawkes competition on the beach wall, which is always great fun, to be held at 6.15pm and shortly afterwards at 6:30 pm, the bonfire will be lit. A splendid, supervised fireworks display will start at around 7.15pm.
You won’t be hungry!
For those concerned about getting peckish, there will be the usual abundance of stalls offering soup, burgers, hot potatoes, hot dogs and all sorts of goodies. This is a great family event which promises fun for everyone.
But if upmarket eating is your preference, then this part of Devon is for you and is well known for an excellent selection of eateries, with a wide range of restaurants in Shaldon, Teignmouth and Paignton to choose from.
And of course, as you would expect from the English Riviera, there is a wide selection of public houses to choose from, many of which serve excellent pub grub and traditional real ales.
So there you have it. If you are looking for a short break which is different and entertaining, representing real value for money, then why not consider Shaldon´s beach party, a celebration of Guy Fawkes Night.
If you haven’t already booked a self-catering holiday in Paignton, Devon now would be an excellent time to do it since many holiday flats in Paignton and surrounding areas tend to become full very quickly over this celebration period.
